Our teeth are one of the strongest parts of our body, but even they have their own limitations. The inside of our teeth, the pulp, is filled with blood vessels and nerve endings that, if they become damaged, will cause intense pain and sensitivity. A toothache can come from several different places. Depending on the amount of pain you feel will tell you if it is something you can try to fix at home or if you need to come into our office for relief.

The Main Causes of a Toothache

Cavities

When we do not practice good oral hygiene, plaque and bacteria can build up along our gum line. This can create an acid that will burn small holes in your teeth, making them weak and brittle. This will cause a sharp and deep pain in your tooth if not taken care of right away. We can stay on top of taking care of cavities with your bi-yearly visits to the dentist’s office.

Tooth Decay

When cavities are not taken care of, it can cause tooth decay. Tooth decay can also come from excessive sugar and not taking care of your teeth. If you begin to feel pain in, around, or when pressure is applied to your tooth, you could be experiencing tooth decay. Come into our office right away, and we can talk about your restoration options.

An Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is a tooth infection that goes deep into the tooth socket and affects the root of your tooth. It needs to be professionally diagnosed, but there are symptoms that you can look out for. If your gums are inflamed, you have a pocket of pus around your tooth and are in a lot of pain, you may have an abscessed tooth. Come see us right away!

There are other causes of toothaches, such as damaged dental work or grinding your teeth at night. While both of these issues are less extreme, they still need to be treated right away to prevent them from turning into larger issues.

At-Home Treatment for a Toothache

You can do some things at home to see if you can reduce the pain on your own before coming into our office. Some of the suggestions we have include:

  • Rinse your mouth with salt water. Warm salt water can kill bacteria hidden in the pits and fissures of your teeth and remove any lodged food.
  • Use a cold compress. This can significantly reduce the amount of inflammation you feel and relieve your pain.
  • Thoroughly brush your teeth and floss. The problem could be as simple as a hidden popcorn kernel in your back molars!
  • Take any over-the-counter medications. Ibuprofen and Tylenol are great options to help relieve any pain you are feeling.

After trying some of these at-home methods, if you are still in a lot of pain, give us a call, and we will get you in right away.
